Foundation for religion and the Avatarian Church
Posted 4/27/2009 2:38:32 AM by ZackWonder - [Show All My Posts]

The Avatarian Church of Second Life now has 8 members, and we already have gotten some donations. Since the original blog entry on April 24th, I have started thinking, what actually constitutes a "Church"? Since I have invented this religion, it needs obviously some structure, and a minimal set of rules, such as "Commandments". The Commandments are almost ready to be announced.

I found the following on NBC News web pages, written by Don Teague on May 21, 2007:

"But is this really church?

Elaine Heath is an ordained minister and professor at Southern Methodist University. She says that people have to be in a community living out faith together to really have a church. Still, Nathan Karline says the message is the same. He hasn't been to a real church since finding faith in Second Life."

I tend to agree on this. A religion, or a church really does not need a deity figure, it does not need to promise anything about an afterlife, it does not need to answer questions of origin of life or anything like that. We only need faith.

The Avatarian Church does not really need to define faith as anything else but a common understanding of willingness to propagate an open-minded culture in Second Life, and just generally be civil toward the Fellow Resident. If this is a common belief that we can call faith, if this blog resonates in your mind as a worthy cause, please join. You can just send me a message asking to join and I will forward you the group joiner message in SL.

Thanks for reading,

Zack

1. "soft kisses", you got it right. I am working on the Commandments, and the first one will be "There are no Commandments", and the second one most likely is "If you have a religion in RL, this is not it"... I think being "all-inclusive" would mean exactly that everyone will be embraced, if they want to join.
